February 11, 2023 Artist RoundTable – The Art Spirit by Robert Henri
Robert Henri was a great American artist and teacher who thought outside the box for his time. He valued mastery of his medium, but not in the manner of a rigid academic style thinking that stifled natural creativity for an artist. He pioneered the Ashcan School of American Realism. Henri attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and went on to study in Paris under William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He embraced impressionism while in Paris.
He eventually went against academic art, including impressionism and pioneered a fresh outlook on creating a painting. In a sense he was ‘the father of independent painting”, for this reason and his thoughtful writings to his students I have picked this book as our first book to use for a discourse on art.
Join us on Saturday February 11, 2023, in room M10 at the Cary Arts Center 3-4:30 pm. You are encouraged to read the book – The Art Spirit, but nevertheless even if you don’t, come and enjoy a lively Artist RoundTable discussion about art inspired by this book. Please bring guests, as members and non-members are invited.
The book is available in libraries, as well as online to buy - as a book or as an audio recording.
