Copying the Masters (19)

Created on: March 16, 2021
One of the best ways to learn is by copying the masters. While in school, we did this--a lot! Some are from photographs of the images. Some are from standing front of the originals in museums. I still try to do this every once in a while. I always learn something. Here are some examples of the lessons.
  • Conte crayon copy of a print from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
  • Conte crayon copy of a pen-and-ink print from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The original is one of my favorite drawings. It depicts the widow of a samurai warrior and her four daughters in mourning.
  • Charcoal copy of a study of a nude by Camille Corot
  • Conte crayon copy of a statue from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is one of the Four Seasons, maybe "Spring." It was done a long time ago for an assignment for a drawing class.

  • Conte crayon study of a statue at the Art Institute of Chicago.
